If you’re expecting a package from FedEx with a mandatory signature, but you won’t be available on the expected delivery date, you have several options. In most cases, you can ask someone else to sign the package or sign a form to waive the signature request. You can also deliver the package to where you live or keep it for later delivery. Even if you receive a missed FedEx delivery notification after an unsuccessful delivery, you can expect FedEx to make additional deliveries and give you many ways to receive the package safely.
FedEx Shipping Process
When creating a shipment using FedEx, the shipper determines whether a package needs a signature and who is allowed to sign it, such as a relative or neighbor. If the sender doesn’t ask for a signature, you’ll receive your package even if no one is there when FedEx visits. In this case, FedEx delivery staff will only leave your package on your doorstep or at another designated location.
If the delivery driver is unable to get the required signature, he will leave a FedEx door card with detailed information about the delivery effort and about the options for receiving your package. The card usually lists a FedEx location where you can pick up the package during business hours and notes that another delivery effort will be made the next day. You can also sign the card and leave it at the door for the next delivery.
Consider other signature options
Even if you’re not there to sign the package yourself on your first or next delivery, you can ask someone else to sign it to prevent delays in receiving your package. The sender can request an adult signature directly, indirectly, or an adult signature. For a direct or adult signature, you can ask anyone at your home address to sign the package, but the person must be 21 years of age or older to provide an adult signature. If your shipment requires an indirect signature, you can ask a neighbor, landlord, or nearby authorized person to sign the package.
Sign a FedEx signature release
If you’re not home and there’s no one else to sign the package, you can fill out the FedEx signature issuance form online to waive the signature requirement for the first delivery. However, availability for this option is up to the shipper, so you should check the delivery confirmation email or FedEx tracking page to see if the form is available. Note that, since signing a signature issuance form means FedEx is not legally liable if the package is stolen or damaged, this option may not be ideal for high-value items such as computers and mobile phones.
Make changes to the delivery
You have the option to change the time, date, and location of delivery both before the first delivery and after the failed delivery. This service comes with a fee depending on the distance of the delivery location and the priority period for delivery. However, it gives you the benefits when the package is delivered to where you will be (such as your workplace) or chooses another day and time when you get home. Call 1-800-GO-FEDEX, use the FedEx Delivery Manager website or select the rescheposing option on the FedEx tracking page for your shipment.
Retention request to receive
Instead of asking FedEx to deliver at your home or another location, you can allow delivery to another location, such as FedEx Delivery Center, Walgreens, Kroger, Albertsons, or FedEx Office. Call FedEx or visit its website to request this free option. By choosing a nearby business to keep your package, you’ll get the benefit of being able to sign and pick up goods at a convenient time without having to worry about unsupervised packages.
